Romania @ CERN – ratificat de parlament

Primit acum cateva minute pe adresa de la CERN

I have today received written confirmation that the Romanian government has formally approved the country’s candidacy for accession.

Romania’s route to membership began in 2008, when Council accepted the country’s candidacy for accession. In February this year, the Romanian Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sport, Daniel Petru Funeriu, and I signed the agreement. The unanimous ratification by the Romanian parliament on 13 October 2010, confirmed in writing today, is the final step in activating the accession process. Romania’s pre-membership will cover a five-year period from 1 January 2010 during which the country’s contributions will ramp up to normal Member State levels in parallel with growing participation in CERN projects.

Romania’s involvement with CERN goes back much further than 2008, however. Romanian scientists started to work on CERN experiments in the early 1990s, and today, Romania is a member of three LHC collaborations, ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb. Romanian institutes also contribute to the DIRAC and ISOLDE programs and to GRID computing.
